چکیده

The rumen ciliate Ophryoscolex caudatus fermented starch with the production of acetic, butyric, and lactic acids plus CO(2) and H(2). Cellulose was not significantly metabolized although pectin was rapidly attacked in the Warburg apparatus. The protein sources, cottonseed, soybean, and linseed oil meals, and the amino acids, dl-alanine, dl-valine, and dl-leucine, were utilized by the protozoan, whereas ammonia was demonstrated as an end product of nitrogenous metabolism. Methods for the separation of O. caudatus from mixed rumen contents are described.

Comparison digestibility and protozoa population of Khuzestan water buffalo and Holstein cow

The major aim of this study was to compare the morphology and activity of rumen protozoa of Khuzestan water buffalo and Holstein cow using in vitro digestibility and gas production parameters of steam treated sugarcane pith. Rumen fluid obtained from two buffalo and cow steers fed the same diet, 30:70 concentrate: forage. To separate rumen protozoa, antibiotic solution and fungicides were added...

A re-appraisal of the diversity of the methanogens associated with the rumen ciliates.

The diversity of methanogenic archaea associated with different species of ciliated protozoa in the rumen was analysed. Partial fragments of archaeal SSU rRNA genes were amplified from DNA isolated from single cells from the rumen protozoal species Metadinium medium, Entodinium furca, Ophryoscolex caudatus and Diplodinium dentatum. Sequence analysis of these fragments indicated that although al...

The Structure and Formation of Cilia and Filaments in Rumen Protozoa

The large oligotrich rumen protozoa Diplodinium ecaudatum and Ophryoscolex caudatus have been studied by electron microscopy during interphase and division. The structure of mature cilia is contrasted with that seen during their formation particularly in a tuft where development lags and is arrested. Here the shaft is only a few micra long and is composed of filaments that have circular cross-s...

Ultrastructure of the Cortex of the Rumen Ciliate Ophryoscolex purkynjei Stein, 1858 (Entodiniomorphida: Ophryoscolecidae)

The ultrastructure of the cortex of Ophryoscolex purkynjei, an entodiniomorphid ciliate obtained from domesticated cattle rumens, was studied and found to have five layers. A particulate and/or filamentous glycocalyx layer, triple membrane layer, homogeneous epiplasmic layer with very fine grains, microtubular layer characterized with a double row of microtubule bundles each containing at most ...

2-Aminoethylphosphonic acid concentrations in some rumen ciliate protozoa.

The concentration of 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid has been measured in seven genera of rumen ciliate protozoa. Expressed as milligrams per gram of total nitrogen, 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid concentrations ranged from 17.2 in Ophryoscolex spp. to 72.4 in Eremoplastron spp.
